God's Grace is so Easy

Last week I had to go early to daily Mass because one of my sons were serving. When I walked into the church I noticed there was no one in line for the Confessional. [There is always a line for Confessions at my parish…apparently the word on the street is…it is full of sinners. :) ]

So I decided to take advantage of this rare occurrence, prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and did a quick examination of conscience and went over to the Confessional.

The Confessional door was open, I went in, knelt down, unloaded (or offloaded) my sins, received absolution and done.

As I was walking back to the pew, I had the thought, “That was easy!”

And it is, God’s grace is so easy!

SIDE BAR - Now do not misunderstand me, I am not trying to undervalue the Incarnation or the suffering, passion and death of Jesus Christ to earn us that grace. Mediating on those points are great for understanding the weight of our sin. I certainly do not want to cheapen God’s grace with the sin of presumption, as if repentance and amendment of life were not necessary. I am also not undervaluing the need for us to cooperate with grace in moral living and good works…

But God has made access to His grace so so so easy.

The synoptic Gospels recount the story of the woman hemorrhaging blood for 12 years, “who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse” (Mk 5:26).

After all the doctors, all the money, and all the suffering; the woman simply needed to come to Christ. She didn’t even need to touch Jesus, but only “touched the fringe of His garment” (Lk 8:44). Just the fringe!

That is so easy compared to the 12 years of suffering.

Now, she did have to make the long journey to encounter Christ. Tradition holds that she came from a far distance in the north near Caesarea Philippi. She also had to push and fight through the crowds to get near to Jesus. Finally, the woman had to reach out her hand in faith to be healed. These outward actions manifesting her inward heart.

But in comparison to what this woman experienced before…this grace came to her so easily.

We might have to make time in our already busy schedules, we might have to get in a car and fight traffic just to drive over to the church, but in comparison to the grace that the Lord desires to bestow upon us….it is so easy.

Let us not squander this great mercy constantly being shown to us. Let us reach out in faith to access this easy grace that can heal us so profoundly.

AND, let us confidently show and share with those who are still currently suffering, trying to find healing through human avenues, how much God desires to heal them and give them access to His easy grace.
